TorGuard Review

TorGuard VPN is a well known VPN that offers a multitude of different services for every type of end user. In this TorGuard review, we will go over the best features that TorGuard has to offer. This TorGuard review will also cover any improvements that could be made. By the end of this TorGuard review, you’ll know if TorGuard is the right VPN choice for you.

Pricing 9/10

torguard-review-1

TorGuard VPN has a standard price of $9.99 a month. However, it shines in that it’s 3-month plan is very cheap at $19.99. Its 6-month plan is also affordable at only $29.99 while it’s annual plan is only $59.99.

TorGuard is one of the few VPNs to add gift cards as a payment option, but they also accept standard options like Paypal, credit card, and also BitCoin payment.

Besides the core VPN offering, TorGuard also offers some extra add-on services as a proxy, encrypted email, more licenses, DDOS protection, additional Viscosity licenses, and even dedicated IP addresses. It’s great to see that TorGuard offers additional services that are appropriately priced.

Some services reduce services from their core VPN, but TorGuard doesn’t. They include all features you’d typically see in a VPN, and then they give you the option of extra. Other VPNs like Astrill purposely take some things away from their core VPN package while TorGuard includes them (Stealth VPN for example or NAT firewall).

TorGuard also offers a great 7-day refund policy if you’re not happy with their service.

Software 10/10

torguard-review-3

TorGuard  includes security features to ensure your own safety while torrenting or if you’re in China. These features include DNS leak protection to make sure that a DNS leak doesn’t give away your real IP Address.

The client also has checkboxes to protect against IPv6 leaks and WebRTC security. TorGuard is also one of the few VPN providers to provide a free Stealth Proxy within their client alongside Stealth VPN servers. It’s as simple as checking a box.

Not only that, but the application is one of the few VPN apps that has both a network and application kill switch. So if your VPN connection falters, your chosen app will close–ensuring that you don’t torrent without the VPN active. The network kill switch functions similarly closing down your network if your VPN disconnects.

TorGuard has also recently introduced a new dedicated IP address function that lets you quickly access Netflix. They hand out Netflix IP addresses, and all you have to do is plug it into the client. Here’s a useful guide on that.

Besides the security additions, the application just works well overall. We didn’t encounter any bugs while using it, installation was easy, and the connection times were very quick.

In 2017, TorGuard has updated their  core app and it looks much better. It also includes new integrations like dedicated IP address integration, a new open connect protocol to give you faster speeds, and more Stealth VPN servers.

Mobile Software 10/10

torguard-review-4

TorGuard’s mobile software works very well–and it looks almost identical to the Windows version.

The installation is very easy and doesn’t require you to mess with phone settings when connecting. In 2017, TorGuard has added more features into the app like dedicated IP address integration, and the ability to favorite servers which is great to see.

Extra Services 10/10

Anonymous Proxy

torguard-review-5

TorGuard offers an anonymous proxy service as a complement to their main VPN. A proxy is different from a VPN since it doesn’t encrypt all of your internet traffic–instead only through a torrent application or internet browser. Fortunately, TorGuard offers both options for you.

You can choose to purchase the service and use it through their browser extensions or use it inside a BitTorrent application, as described here.

TorGuard’s proxy service is quite easy to use the browser. You simply download the extension, enter your login information, and you’re ready to go! It’s an excellent alternative to VPN for Chromebooks.

Encrypted Email

TorGuard also offers encrypted email if you’re looking to get a more secure email service separate from Google’s email service (Google is known to track user data and use it for advertising).

TorGuard’s email service comes with a free 10MB box with a sign-up. It’s powered by OpenPGP encryption with unlimited email storage and mobile support as well. They’ve also built in a calendar, tasks, key storage, bulk import features, and advanced search.

VPN Routers

torguard-review-7

TorGuard VPN is also one of the few VPN provider companies that actually ships and sold pre-flashed DDWRT VPN routers. These routers are a great way to extend your VPN network beyond just your computer but to every one of your Internet-compatible devices. So you can access Netflix on your iPad in bed, for example.

Stealth VPN

torguard-review-8

As we mentioned earlier, TorGuard provides free Stealth VPN services as well as a complementary Stealth Proxy inside the primary VPN package. When these two security features work together, your VPN becomes invisible making your internet traffic look like regular HTTP traffic. It’s perfect for users in censored countries. Not many VPNs support censored countries with extra security additions, so it’s great to see.

Website 10/10

torguard-vpn-review-1 (5)

TorGuard VPN has a lot of extra services, but they also have a ton of additional support articles, guides, and documentation that is useful for entry level users. They also have a forum, and 24/7 live chat.

Overall we liked how straightforward the site is, and it doesn’t try to “sell” too hard like some sites do. You can find detailed feature tables, pricing, and even useful VPN news on their blog.

Privacy 10/10

TorGuard VPN has some of the best privacy around. They have 256-bit  AES encryption, a 2048-bit RSA key, multiple Stealth VPN services with Stealth Proxy for double layered encryption, as well as multiple protocol choices.

They don’t collect ANY logs at all either, which is very nice to see.

Servers 9/10

torguard-review-8

TorGuard VPN has a ton of servers (they list 3000+ servers in 55+ countries). We tested numerous TorGuard VPN servers and found good speeds and reliable connectivity with each.

Speed 10/10

torguard-review-9

TorGuard VPN is a great VPN to choose if you need high speeds for media streaming, torrenting, or even gaming. We were impressed with high speeds in the speed test, but impressed with a 20 Mbps torrent download speed (nearly identical to non-VPN tested speeds). In 2017, they’ve introduced openconnect which can give you even faster speeds.

Customer Support 10/10

torguard-vpn-review-1 (1)

TorGuard VPN has the best customer support in the VPN industry–no questions asked. Besides having countless articles and well-organized support documentation, they have 24/7 live chat and remote sessions.

VPN customer support can more often than not, be a hassle. Whether it’s fighting over refunds, clarifying information, or just trying to get your VPN to work with Netflix–it’s all present in other VPNs, but not with TorGuard.

We’ve struggled with PIA to get a BitCoin refund, fought with NordVPN not to get a refund at all, and even been hassled by VPN providers to verify accounts before we can hand them money in the first place.

Verdict

TorGuard VPN is one of the best VPN providers you can find. From high speeds to reliable support, to outstanding application offerings, you can’t be let down in any category.

They’ve set out to accomplish extra VPN offerings that make their VPN stand out, and they even provide support for Netflix when no other VPN does. While no VPN is perfect, TorGuard VPN certainly comes close.
